Years after suffering the tragic loss of her husband, Ethan, which left her alone to raise their young daughter, Clare Murray still holds the last letter he wrote with the words "When You're Ready" written in his familiar messy handwriting, unable to break its weathered seal. Ready for what? He was her entire world, and Clare had accepted a life without him, without love. Until years later, fate brings her to an emergency room, and face to face with a stormy-eyed doctor intent on changing her mind.
Son of a billionaire, Logan Matthews has spent his life trying to make his absentee father proud. Without a family to depend on, all he's ever wanted is a place to call home. After a failed marriage, Logan believes he's unworthy of love...until he meets a woman who awakens his spirit and transforms his entire life in an instant.
But how far are Clare and Logan willing to go for love? Can his love mend the pieces of her grieving heart?
When their love is tested, is Clare ready to put her whole heart on the line again? Can Logan learn the true meaning of love, even if it means sacrificing his own happiness? When a second chance at love is given, Clare and Logan learn you are never truly ready until you're ready to risk it all.
Logan Matthews is a famous doctor, and part of his fame is due to his wealthy father and Logan’s recent divorce, which made it to the gossip headlines. He has come to Richmond, VA to escape his NYC life, but he is still trying to fill the void in his heart, sometimes overdoing it on the booze and sex with random women.
One night in the ER however, Logan meets Clare Murray, a single mother who lost her husband to cancer 3 years back. Apart from being drawn to Clare from the first moment on, a special connection between him, Clare and Clare’s daughter Maddie forms straight away. But will he be right for her? And is it too soon for Clare to engage into a new relationship rather than a random rebound while it is clear she is still grieving?
I discovered When You’re Ready during one of my browses through the Amazon Kindle Shop. I was intrigued by the plot and thought that at the bargain price of $1.99 I could take this risk. And it turns out it was completely worth it.
The story is follows the pretty straightforward manwhore-gets-instalove-crush plot, with the exception that the crush – in this instance – is not the uncomplicated single, but the grieving single mother who hasn’t dated in ages and doesn’t know what to do about it. Even with a more or less standard plot like this one, the story is enjoyable: Clare is adorable, and Logan turns out to be the perfect book boyfriend every girl would swoon about.
There are a few details I don’t necessarily agree with, like the pace at which Logan gets attached to both Clare and her daughter, and just how “naturally” he scoops the child in his arms and starts playing the father figure. This is of course what every single mother would wish for in an ideal world, but for someone who had never thought about kids (at least not in any other way but the clinical way, due to his job), I find him awfully comfortable a little to soon.
Logan also shows a great deal of self control in taking it slow with Clare. Again, this would be the perfect scenario in an ideal world but hardly believable given his past encounters. But hey, one can always dream and swoon?
What I’ve come to enjoy the most was of course the dual POV (especially Logan’s) and the humour in this book. It had a few typos and missing punctuation here and there, and while it was short it was short and sweet, and totally worth my time and little money!
