Set in the steamy coastal Alabama town of Sea Breeze, an interconnected group of older teens hook up, break up ...and much, much more. Cage York has a free ride to college for baseball - or he did, until he got in trouble for drink-driving. Now he has to give in to his coach's demands and spend his summer baling hay. No hot babes in bikinis waiting to meet a Southern boy to make her vacation complete. Just him and the damned cows. Oh and an uptight, snarky brunette with the biggest blue eyes he's ever seen.
Eva Brooks planned out her life step by step when she was eight years old. Not once over the years had she lost sight of her goals. Josh Beasley, her next door neighbour, had been the centre of those goals. He'd been her first boyfriend at seven, her first kiss at ten, her first date at fifteen and her first tragedy at eighteen. The moment she'd received the phone call from Josh's mother saying he'd been killed along with four other soldiers just north of Baghdad, Eva's carefully planned life imploded in the worst way possible. Now she has to deal with the arrogant Cage York and his irritating smile. But as the summer bailing hay rolls by, Cage and Eva learn that what they want (and need) may be something they never saw coming.
Cage York has one last chance to prove himself and to not screw up his sports scholarship for college. His coach sent him away to a farm for the summer, to prove he can be serious and hard working. There are a lot of things Cage will have to leave behind: the many women, the booze, and his best friend and soulmate Willow.
There’s not much to say about Cage’s stay at the farm, but there is something that caught his attention – or rather someone: Eva Brooks is the daughter of the farm owner, and totally of limits. However, Cage can’t help feeling attracted to her, in a way totally different from all the other girls he just lured into his bed. But Eva is closed off, and Cage will have to work to break down her walls…
I wasn’t necessarily blown of my feet by this Abbi Glines book, and god knows I love Abbi Glines, and especially the Rosemary Beach series. But chronologically, the Sea Breeze series came before the Rosemary books, and they are indeed more shy of action and of intriguing story lines.
In While it Lasts, the plot is clear. Total manwhore falls head over heels for the off-limits and innocent virgin. While she has issues and need to be treated with care and love, he still needs to understand how to deal with his predicament and make her forget his manwhorish ways from the past (because he’s obviously reformed now). And of courser, to make the plot more enticing, said innocent virgin was engaged to a soldier who fell in Afghanistan, so obviously reformed-manwhore has to make sure that innocent virgin isn’t grieving too much and/or looking for a rebound.
So yeah, the story is not sensational as such, but the dual POV writing is good and the steamy scenes very nice albeit scarce (don’t forget that this is an Abbi Glines in the making), so all in all it was an enjoyable read. Oh and I must say this reminded me a lot of Lost & Found by Nicole Williams, but it is definitely the other way around.
All in all, the book was good, but not as breathtaking as other Abbi Glines books!
